FLINT (Jan. 24, 2012) — Genesee County Treasurer Deb Cherry, Dr. David Gordon and Dr. Nathan C. Kopek have been named to the Genesee Health Plan’s Board of Directors, GHP leaders announced today.

“These three new board members bring a high level of knowledge and dedicated to the Genesee Health Plan Board of Directors,” said GHP President and CEO Linda Hamacher. “We at GHP are very excited to have such talented and esteemed individuals representing the community as GHP board members, and I’m looking forward to working closely with them in the months and years ahead.”

Cherry, a former state senator, also serves as chairwoman of the Greater Flint Health Coalition.

Gordon, a medical doctor, is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and is the dean of the University of Michigan-Flint School of Health Professions and Studies.

Kopek, a doctor of osteopathy, is a practicing physician at Genesys Medical Center. He also serves on the faculty of the Internal Medicine Residents program and is an assistant clinical medical professor at Michigan State University.

Other GHP board members include: Jean Conyers of the Timber Hill Group; Kay Doerr of the Genesee County Board of Health and the University of Michigan; Dan Dulin of Mott Children’s Health Center; Kevin Murphy, senior vice president and chief financial officer at Hurley Medical Center; Linda Hamacher, president and CEO of the Genesee Health Plan; Nancy Haywood, chief financial officer at Genesys Health System; Dr. Michael Jaggi, vice president and chief medical officer at Hurley Medical Center; E. Yvonne Lewis of the Universal Kidney Foundation; Joseph Leonard, a pharmacist and pharmacy manager at Walgreen’s; Mark Valacak, health officer at the Genesee County Health Department and chairman of the GHP board; and Rick Wyles, chief financial officer at McLaren Regional Medical Center.

Launched in 2001, Genesee Health Plan provides basic health services to about 25,000 adults in Genesee County who don’t have health insurance. Services provided include doctor visits, lab tests, X-rays and basic prescriptions. Genesee Health Plan is the only local health plan in Michigan that is funded directly by the community through a special millage.
